“Beachcoma Showcase”

12 midnight: Fairmont (Beachcoma, Toronto)
Style: Electronic Music

Jake Fairley aka Fairmont is an electronic music producer and DJ from Toronto. He began his career in the early 2000s, making punk-rock-infused techno and electro under his own name for labels such as Kompakt, Sender and Dumb-Unit. However, it was his 2005 smash-hit Gazebo that solidified him as a heavyweight in the global underground scene. Released on James Holden’s Border Community label, Gazebo sold 20,000 vinyl copies, made Fairmont a household name and remains a club standard to this day. In 2007, the album Colored in Memory hit store shelves and became an instant classic. It showcased, Fairmont’s refusal to have a linear view of techno music by moving effortlessly between zeitgeist and influences that might have seemed completely out of place at the time, be it surf-rock, folk, or kraut.

The next few years would see Fairmont’s sound evolving even further, incorporating dark disco and Goth elements into the mix, culminating with his next album, Automaton. Released on his new home-label, My Favorite Robot Records (MFRR), Automaton had a strong, albeit fresh, 1980s influence, with vocals dominating all of its 11 tracks. In 2016, MFRR released one Fairmont’s finest releases, the Carthage EP. With it, Fairmont went back to making prime-time club bangers.

Since Automaton, Fairmont has been running the label Beachcoma with his friends Metope and Sid Le Rock, touring every continent on the globe, remixing artists such as John Digweed and Henry Saiz, and still finding time for his own productions.

Other releases followed under Pan/Tone (2006) and Sid Le Rock, for such labels as Hafendisko, My Favorite Robot Records, Nein Records, Dantze, or Tenampa.
