This specialized course is about the concept and practice of drawing. The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum runs a wide variety of art courses, in this case, coinciding with the exhibition Masterpieces on Paper from Budapest.
Conducted by Kosme de Barañano, Professor of Art History, this course will feature world-renowned guest speakers—scholars, curators, collectors, artists—who will share their knowledge with a small group of participants through dialogue and the exchange of ideas.
The program combines classes led by the course director, who will explain the different types of drawing, instruments, and mediums, as well as their history, also addressing the sense of style (stylus), with specific classes on Spanish, Italian, and German drawing and collecting, complemented by the direct analysis of unique works of art history and drawing present in the galleries of the Museum.
In addition, we will look at the most current trends in drawing through contemporary artistic practice: As well as exploring drawings in the European tradition (Italian and German), some speakers will discuss their own work. The course will conclude with a workshop and a participatory performance.
OBJECTIVES
- To learn the keys and analysis of graphic tools (pencils, inks, etc.) and mediums (stucco, paper, etc.) through the daily experience of world experts.

- To highlight the importance of drawing as a technique and as an autonomous discipline through a selection of creative processes and works by artists for whom drawing is essential.

- To serve as a platform for joint learning, dialogue and knowledge transfer for professionals, students, researchers, and artists acting in areas connected by drawing.
