The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is committed to environmental conservation and the principles of sustainable development.
This commitment translates into constant efforts to minimize the environmental impact of the Museum’s operations, devising and implementing sustainable energy solutions and non-polluting processes, and promoting activities targeted at eco-efficiency.
CLIMATE NEUTRALITY BY 2030
- 2025 The Museum is awarded the Getty Global Art and Sustainability Fellows Program grant.The Museum becomes a founding member of the global platform Culture for the Planet and renews active membership in the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC).
- 2023 The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao becomes the first museum in Spain to join the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), an international community of arts organizations working to reduce the environmental impact of the museum sector.
- 2022 The Museum’s first Environmental Sustainability Action Plan is developed on the basis of a cross-cutting approach.
- The Museum creates Gu-Zero, a green team with members from different areas. Gu-Zero is entrusted with sharing environmental information, raising environmental awareness, and getting staff members, suppliers, and social players involved.
- 2021 An Environmental Sustainability Strategic Framework is formulated in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- 2004 The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is certified for ISO 14001. Since then, sustainability has been a key concern in the Museum’s Strategic Plan.

The installation of 300 solar panels on the Museum’s rooftops has led to a 5% reduction in electricity consumption and now powers the lighting needs for all exhibition galleries.
