Artium

Vitoria-Gasteiz, Euskadi

This museum and cultural centre inaugurated in 2002 is located in the heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz, next to the mediaeval quarter and the busiest social and commercial area of the city. The museum is part of a ‘cultural axis’ that includes the Centro Cultural Montehermoso and other museums in the city - Playing cards, Archaeology and Natural Science – and is one of the keystones of the national artistic panorama.

Its architect José Luis Catón decided to create a large open space for public use in a trapeze-shaped building. It is organised around and below a square, so many of its galleries are underground.

Inside you will find a varied and singular collection of contemporary art consisting of over three thousand works that illustrate the evolution of Spanish art in the 20th and 21st centuries in a coherent and logical manner. There is also an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions and a large number of educational and cultural activities for different publics, but always related to contemporary thought.
