The Smetana Trio, founded in 1934 by the legendary Czech pianist Josef Páleníček, violinist Alexandr Plocek and cellist František Smetana, is today’s foremost Czech chamber ensemble. Currently comprised of Jitka Čechová (piano), Markéta Janoušková (Violin) and Jan Páleníček (cello), the Smetana Trio perpetuates the interpretational ideals created by its illustrious predecessors, as well as other superlative twentieth-century soloists active in chamber music (Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Richter, Stern, Rose, Istomin).

The recipients of several international awards, the Smetana Trio perform regularly at top music festivals in the Czech Republic—Prague Spring, Janáček May, Moravia Fall, Concentus Moraviae, Malá Strana Chamber Music. They have also toured extensively in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, Great Britain, Egypt, and other countries.

The concert at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, organized by the Museum and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Madrid, will include pieces by Antonín Dvořák and Bědrich Smetana.
