In the context of Zinegoak Festival, the Museum is screening the Brazilian film Onda Nova (1983), about women’s soccer, banned in Brazil for decades.
On the occasion of the 22nd Zinegoak Festival, the Museum is hosting the screening of Onda Nova, the film directed by José Antonio Garcia and premiered at the Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo in 1983. Onda Nova brings together stories about the young players of a newly-formed women’s soccer team in a conservative, male-dominated society. Women’s soccer was forbidden in Brazil between 1941 and 1979. Described as an “erotic and anarchic comedy,” the film was banned by the Brazilian dictatorship and fell into oblivion. In 2024, it was restored and remastered by Cinemateca Brasileira in 4K for the Locarno International Film Festival and then relaunched internationally.
An activity organized with Zinegoak Festival in the context of the TopARTE program of the Gugenheim Museum Bilbao.
