WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE?

With a few rare exceptions, women artists remained in the shadows for many centuries, until impressionist artists drew attention to their creative work in the late 19th century.

The first online course to be offered by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, taught by Lourdes Cirlot, Professor Emeritus of History of Art at the University of Barcelona, will deal with the role played by women artists in the 20th and 21st centuries. Among others, the course’s learning goals are:

  • To understand the virtually invisible role played by women in the history of art by focusing on individual female modern and contemporary artists.
  • To discuss the real contributions made by women, placing them in the history of 20th- and 21st-century art.
  • To analyze the important role played by women artists in disciplines like weaving, performance, and, more recently, video-creation.
