The online art courses of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao offer accessible yet rigorous training in key concepts and topics in the history of modern art, addressed from contemporary perspectives.

Drawing on contributions from experts and based on the Museum’s Collection and its dynamic program, offering a wide range of different activities, the courses are designed to give participants an overview of the subjects under study while awakening their curiosity and kindling their desire to study and learn.

Objetives

The exhibition Sections/Intersections. 25 Years of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection is a great opportunity to learn about contemporary art.

Using a selection of works as case studies, this online course is aimed at:

  • Taking an analytical look at some of the Collection’s iconic and site-specific works, such as Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time and Jenny Holzer’s Installation for Bilbao.
  • Showing the versatile spaces of the building designed by Frank Gehry and the permeability of some works of art and artistic expressions, like Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #831 (Geometric Forms).
  • Analyzing the real contributions of the various artworks to the history of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art.
  • Discussing the leading role played by some artistic expressions in the development of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art.

COURSE STRUCTURE, INTRODUCTION, AND CONTENTS

Conducted by: Jesús Carrillo, Professor of History and Theory of Art at the Autonomous University of Madrid

Availability: The course will be available online for three months. Students will be able to access the course wherever they are, progressing at their own pace. Upon completing a module, they will be able to move on to the next one.

Target audience: Students over 18 who are interested in broadening or updating their knowledge of contemporary art or in getting a few key references. No prior knowledge required. Members of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Community will have priority over other applicants to access the 50 places available.
