Programa
Eugene Onegin
Music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (b. 1840; d. 1893)
After a fifteen-year hiatus, Eugene Onegin is back at the Teatro Real. With music by Tchaikovsky and a libretto by the composer himself and his friend Konstantin Shilovsky, it follows Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse (1931), exploring unrequited love.
Premiered at the Maly Theater, Moscow, on March 29, 1879, and performed at the Bolshoi Theater on January 23, 1881, Eugene Onegin was staged at the Teatro Real for the first time on September 7, 2010. Now, in 2025, marking the 225th anniversary of Pushkin’s birth, it is coming on stage again, with Christof Loy as stage director and Gustavo Gimeno as musical conductor, in co-production with the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet (Oslo) and the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona).
