After a year of studying law, begins to study art with Peter Dreher at the Albert-
Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, Germany.


Continues his studies at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Makes a series of photographs titled Besetzungen , in which he photographs himself performing a Nazi salute in different places in Europe.
Has his first solo show, at Galerie am Kaiserplatz in Karlsruhe, Germany.


Enrolls at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he will meet Joseph Beuys.


Creates a series of large-scale paintings featuring the cavernous wood-lined attic space of his former studio in Höpfingen, Germany.
Exhibits at Galerie Michael Werner in Cologne.


Has a solo show at the Bonner Kunstverein in Bonn.
Participates in Documenta 6 in Kassel, Germany.

Invited by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in the Netherlands to create a work inspired by Rembrandt’s The Nightwatch. The result is a spectacular La berceuse (for Van Gogh), which will be displayed at the Rijksmuseum on the occasion of the Kiefer & Rembrandt exhibition.
His work is shown at Fondazione Vedova in Venice, the White Cube in London, the Craig F. Starr Gallery in New York, and at Ivory Press in Madrid.
