Bock, John

Born in the town of Gribbohm, Schleswig-Holstein, near the border of Germany with Denmark.

Earns a degree in Business Administration from the University of Hamburg. Participates in the group exhibition Kunstkarton at Kunsthaus Hamburg.

Takes part in the group exhibition project 04/04 at Lokaal 01 Antwerpen, in Antwerp.

Earns a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Fine Arts (HFBK) in Hamburg.

The solo exhibition MemmeMussschlafen opens at S.M.A.K – Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, in Ghent, and the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin presents Kunst und Papier auf dem Laufsteg.

Participates in the 48th Venice Biennale with the performance Approximation–RezipientenbedürfniscomaUrUltraUseMaterialMiniMaxi. He also performs Paramoderne = RokokkoGoBrot at the Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark, and Lombardi Bängli at the Kunsthalle Basel. Receives the Ars Viva award, an annual prize from Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft for young artists.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York hosts the exhibition Projects 71: John Bock.

Participates in documenta XI in Kassel.

Starts teaching at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe as a professor of sculpture.

Participates in the 51st Venice Biennale. His work is exhibited in group shows at major institutions, such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Takes part in group exhibitions at MoMA PS1 Contemporary Arts Center in Long Island City, New York. He is nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize.

The exhibition Stapelung opens at MoMA PS1, New York. His work is also shown in the exhibition Live/Work: Performance Into Drawing at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Participates in the exhibition Wunderkammer: A Century of Curiosities at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Curve-Vehicle incl. π-Man-(.) is exhibited at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, and FischGrätenMelkStand at Temporäre Kunsthalle, Berlin. He participates in the 17th Sydney Biennale.

Some of his works are displayed in the group exhibition Berlin 2000–2011: Playing among the Ruins at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; and in The Luminous Interval: The D.Daskalopoulos Collection at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

The Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn hosts the retrospective Im Modder der Summenmutation. The solo exhibition Der Pappenheimer opens at Kunstverein Hamburg. Participates in the 55th Venice Biennale.

The solo exhibition UN-EX-SURROGAT opens at Kulturhuset Stockholm. He participates in the group exhibition Storylines: Contemporary Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Solo exhibitions are presented at The Contemporary Austin, La Panacée in Montpellier, and Berlinische Galerie in Berlin.

The Neuer Berliner Kunstverein in Berlin hosts the exhibition Im AntliTZ des SchädelapparaTZ, and the Kunsthalle Mannheim opens Focus Collection: John Bock. AuraAroma Ω-Beule.

Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen. A Main-Brain-Drain-Drama by John Bock and Lars Eidinger is premiered on February in Schaubühne, Berlin.

His work is displayed in group exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, and Bonn.
