Moves to Paris, where he will earn a master’s degree from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Receives a grant to work abroad from the province of Vizcaya.

Receives a grant from DRAC Île-de-France in Paris and aid for his first solo exhibition from the Délégation aux Arts Plastiques in Paris. Pérez’s work is included in Passions privées at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Traces de la dance at the Musée d’Art de Joliette in Joliette, Canada. Begins the work Desaparecer dentro , which he will develop the following years and which consists of a bust made of red wool pleats.

Holds his first solo exhibition in Paris at Galerie Chantal Crousel. Exhibits at La Fundición in Bilbao. Participates in Lieux recyclés , an outdoor exhibition on the Rue des Jardins Saint-Paul in Paris.

Presents his work Estancias at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg. The subject of his doctoral thesis is approved: “Género e identidad sexual en el arte del siglo XX.” Pérez’s work is featured in L’empreinte at the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Holds exhibitions at the Sala Rekalde in Bilbao and Espacio Uno at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. Participates in a group exhibition with Helena Cabello and Ana Carceller at the Sala Montcada of the Fundació “la Caixa” in Barcelona. Pérez’s work is included in the group exhibition Skin/Shell at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Receives the Gure Artea prize, awarded by the Basque government, and the Premio Ojo Crítico Prize from Radio Nacional de España.

Exhibition Reflejos de un viaje at the École Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Rouen/Frac Haute-Normandie, France. Presents Directions at the Fundació “la Caixa” in Lleida, Spain. Pérez’s work is included in an exhibition at the Spanish Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover. His work also appears in The Tower Wounded by Lightning at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Represents Spain at the XLIX Biennale di Venezia, where he shows the piece Un pedazo de cielo cristalizado. Has two exhibitions: La torre de sonido at La Chapelle de la Vielle Charité in Marseille and La casa de pan at Horno de la Ciudadela in Pamplona. Exhibits a series of small and medium-sized drawings at Gandy Gallery in Prague.

Exhibits the work Sueños largos at Galería Salvador Díaz in Madrid. Begins the installation Tempus fugit , which he will develop for the next two years. Pérez’s Un pedazo de cielo cristalizado is installed in the entrance hall of Artium, Centro Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo in Vitoria, Spain.

A retrospective exhibition of Pérez’s work since 1994 opens at the Carré d’Art, Musée d’Art Contemporain in Nîmes, France, and later travels to Artium, Centro Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo in Vitoria, Spain. Participates in Monocanal at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. The exhibition later travels to several other museums in Spain. Pérez’s Levitas is included in the exhibition Transparencies at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

An exhibition of Pérez’s work entitled Mutaciones is mounted at the Palacio de Cristal, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. Takes part in an exhibition with Luis Bisbe at La Villa du Parc, Centre d’Art Contemporain in Annemasse, France. Pérez’s work in included in the exhibition Goya + España at the Centro Sperimentale per le Arti Contemporanee in Caraglio, Italy. Creates the series of small drawings entitled Metamorfosis .

The exhibition Anomalies is presented at La Criée, Centre d’Art Contemporain in Rennes. Exhibits at the Ecoparque de Trasmiera in Arnuero, Spain, and Galerie Guy Bärtschi in Geneva.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen presents an exhibition of Pérez’s work that will later travel to two other venues in France: the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain de Haute-Normandie in Sotteville-lès- Rouen and the Maison de la Culture in Amiens. Exhibits at Galerie Claudine Papillon in Paris.

Pérez’s work is exhibited alongside that of Judith Huemer in the exhibition Tourist_Terrorist_Artist at Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art in Vienna. It is also featured in the exhibition Speed 1: Natura naturata at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern in Valencia, Spain.

Pérez’s Máscara de seducción (1997) is included in the exhibition Installations: Selections from the Guggenheim Collections at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The solo exhibition Aria de Capo is held at Galería Salvador Díaz in Madrid. Early works by Pérez are shown at the Casal Solleric in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
