Ribera Market, Bilbao

Mercado de la Ribera

Bilbao

Located next to the Puente de San Antón along the river in the Old Quarter, this market is a major landmark in Bilbao because it is the biggest covered market in Europe.

The market has been reformed several times since it was built in the 19th century by the architect Pedro Ispizua. The last reform took place in 2010, in which – remaining faithful to the original design – it was reconstructed without the apse of the church of San Antón, creating a new public space of 1,700 square metres and improving the appearance of the stalls, in addition to other improvements for the well-being and comfort of the stallholders.

The complex has three floors, on which a wide variety of produce can be found. The ground floor contains the fish market; meat is on the first floor, and fruit and vegetables on the top floor.
