The project carried out in these classes was aimed at raising awareness of Zeberio’s cultural richness, getting students familiar with the work of local artists and creators in a variety of disciplines—visual arts, literature, music, and research. The artists included Juan Manuel Etxebarria, Iker Mugarra, Nieves Barrenetxea, María Rivero, Maurizia Aldeiturriaga, and Kepa Pérez Urraza and they shared a way of understanding art that took the land into account.

The students were asked to make videos in which they told about their encounters with the artists, including interviews, landscapes, illustrations, and music. For instance, they illustrated short stories by Etxebarria, painted landscapes inspired by the works of Mugarra and Barrenetxea, shared their ideas about musical expression with Rivero, and created collective compositions as a tribute to Aldeiturriaga, a traditional tambourine player.

In addition, they went on a 9 km tour of the valley with Kepa Pérez Urraza, who offered some of the keys to the valley and its heritage. They left their mark on clay, decorating their footprints with elements from nature and adding clay eyes to the shrines they found, highlighting the importance of looking when it comes to landscapes. Finally, each student took a picture of the place they liked best.

The project’s second phase consisted in making a sculpture installation under an oak tree where there was a time capsule. For the installation, the students used natural and recycled materials, and traditional techniques. The idea was to see art as heritage.

While carrying out this project, the students reached out to the surrounding landscape, strengthened their sense of belonging, and discovered art as both cultural heritage and a means of expression.
