Sustainability with a cross-cutting focus

Sustainability is a core focus across the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, articulated  in the annual Sustainability Action Plans that affect all Museum departments, including specifically energy efficiency, exhibitions, visitor services, public programing, retail operations, and gastronomic offer.

Sustainable logistics and Museography

Our ongoing efforts regarding sustainability in the field of exhibition logistics and museography encompass the exploration and research into new materials and the implementation of measures to reduce the Museum’s carbon footprint, thus integrating artistic practices into a circular economy.

In 2024, we introduced biodegradable paint and 100% recyclable wood fiber board in a small-format exhibition with positive results.

We also prioritize rental crates and remote courier services when dealing with travelling works of art. This technology, introduced in 2020, has enabled us to cut back on staff trips.

At present, we are focusing on the promotion of MUSEOTIK, a tool developed in 2024 to share, recycle, and reuse staging materials within the network of Basque museums.

Store/bookstore and culinary facilities

Over the past few years, the Museum Store/Bookstore has increased the number of sustainable items offered to clients.

Likewise, our gastronomic spaces offer mostly in-season and local foods. Thus, work is done in close collaboration with local producers in our efforts to serve fresh, high-quality meals.

Events

Since 2023, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has been cultivating a culture of sustainability in the events organized for exhibition openings as well as in its Annual Gala, thus contributing to sustainable development and increasing the positive social impact of its operations. The Museum was recently awarded the Erronka Garbia certification by IHOBE and was certified for sustainable event management in compliance with standard ISO 20121.
